Moggy's Story

I had just dropped RT off at the airport and went to the pet shop to buy some hay on my way home. Rosanne had joked that morning "don't forget to pick up a bunny". So, I walked into Pisces Pet Emporium and saw this really nice bunny at the end of an aisle in what was basically an aquarium. There seemed to be an instant mutual attraction, and I swear he was trying to get out and meet me. Normally I check out the bunnies, but I always resist the temptation to bring yet another home, and, I have a strict "never buy a bunny from a pet shop" policy. This little guy was different.

I had never before asked to see a bunny at a pet store but this little fart was special. At first I refused to hold him but then I gave in and he climbed up my chest and licked my face like a puppy. I asked where this really nice looking Holland Lop had come from because you usually do not see this quality of rabbit in a pet store.

Apparently a rabbit breeder brought him and his brother in 2 weeks earlier. The brother sold but this guy was still there. The clerk told me that nobody wants to buy "big" bunnies (as if he is a hippo ... all 4 pounds of him); they all want little teeny ones. The clerk and I both chuckled about the fact that all those tiny bunnies usually end up much bigger than a Holland Lop. They were overrun with bunnies at the store and all were on sale. I was informed that they really wanted to find this guy a good home because he is so friendly, but if he didn't sell soon he might end up as snake food. I gave the clerk my card and told her to call if it came to that.

I figured RT had landed at her destination city of Saskatoon, so I grabbed my hay and headed home to call her and tell her about this bunny. She told me to get right back in the car and go get him. I prepared a spot for him and headed back to the store. $12.99, SOLD to the guy with the moustache (that's me of course)! This was not a pet store purchase, it was in my opinion, a RESCUE.

Interestingly enough, when they brought him out we happened to look in his ear and saw a tattoo, 5A2, so when I got back home I called our friends who breed rabbits to ask if they could tell who the breeder was from the tattoo. I wanted to find out as much as I could about this bunny. When I told them the tattoo they were surprised to realize that it was their bunny. Then they realized what must have happened. They were at a rabbit show a month earlier and had given him and his brother to another breeder. Turns out that person had a change of heart and ended up dumping them at the pet store. I was never clear on this but it sounded like the breeder that took them was considering eating them. I could be wrong. It would be interesting to find out exactly what happened!

Mogwai was 4.5 months old at the time and as it turns out, is a full brother to our other 2 bunnies. They all have the same birthday too! So Mog has had quite a time in his short life; 3 moves, possible Hasenpfeffer, then almost snake food. We are so happy to have him as part of our family. He's super friendly, very playful and a very laid back little fart too. He weighed 4 pounds 3 ounces so yes, he is just over show weight limit for a Holland, but that is just fine with us because we now have a great bunny. We think it was meant to be that he is with us, living the life of Riley.

Incidently, he is quite vocal and has a fairly extensive repertoire of oinks, grunts, sqeegee and woof sounds and he has a healthy thump when he wants (very rare). The origin of his name is the movie "Gremlins". Supposedly mogwai is the Chinese word for gremlin. In any event, it suits him because he looks like Gizmo, the good gremlin. We figured that there must be a million Gizmos out there so we didn't want to name him that, but liked the gremlin idea. He also has a typical gremlin/lagomorph personality; very mischevious.
